As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt daily life, Safaricom has set its sights on expanding its home fibre coverage to ensure its subscribers remain connected.

According to Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa, the company has a 'huge opportunity' to enable its customers to work or study from home.

Between March and June, Safaricom added 25,000 new home fibre connections, and Ndegwa stated that the company is planning to roll out a home fibre connection plan.

Safaricom currently offers four home fibre packages designed to meet a subscriber's daily work, education, or entertainment requirements.

As part of its efforts to support its customers and the public during the pandemic, Safaricom has spent nearly KSh 6.5 billion.

During the company's virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM), shareholders passed a resolution appointing Ernst & Young as the firm's external auditors, replacing Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

Shareholders also approved a dividend payout worth KSh 56 billion, which will be payable on or about 31st August 2020.

Additionally, shareholders re-elected Ms Rose Ogega, Dr Bitange Ndemo, and Mr Mohamed Joosub, while replacing Mrs Esther Koimett, who was directed to be replaced by Dr Julius Muia, the Principal Secretary, National Treasury.

Michael Joseph, the firm's former CEO and Chairman of the Board of Kenya Airways, has been appointed as the new Chairman of Safaricom's Board, replacing Nicholas Nganga, who has retired after 13 years with the company.
