On a quest for natural skincare solutions, two sisters, Parvis and Diana Swan, turned their passion into a business, Akusi Organics, which started in their Nairobi home.

Parvis, the product formulator, had struggled with eczema her whole life and sought an organic solution. She began making products in her kitchen, initially for herself, then her family and friends, before joining forces with her sister Diana.

With savings, the duo built their customer base by attending popup and organic markets, gathering feedback to inform their product line. Diana, the CEO, credits her background in events management and human resources for helping the business grow.

However, competition and finding reliable suppliers have been significant challenges. Parvis notes that new players enter the market regularly, making it competitive, but also creating opportunities for niche players.

Diana emphasizes the importance of thorough research and vetting suppliers. Parvis adds that consumers are becoming more aware of product ingredients and are seeking natural alternatives.

Advice from the sisters to businesswomen entering the beauty and skincare market includes starting small, building from there, and finding a niche. They also recommend finding a mentor and doing thorough research.

Parvis and Diana's favorite products from the Akusi range include avocado soap, shea butter soap, coffee scrub soap, lemongrass soap, and lavender and tea tree body butter.
