A Nairobi court has intervened in a dispute between parents and the management of SABIS International School in Runda, ordering a 20 percent reduction in third-term fees.
The decision comes after some parents took the school to court, accusing the management of insisting on full payment of fees for online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Justice James Makau ruled that parents will only pay 80 percent of the fees until the school reopens.
"A conservatory order is hereby issued staying implementation of payment of full fees payable to the directors and the school," the judge said.
The parents argued that the school had failed to meet its part of the bargain due to the pandemic, and that it was unfair to maintain full school fees.
The court found that the parents had proved their case under the Consumer Protection Act, which protects consumers from unfair business practices.
The ruling is a significant victory for parents who have been struggling to pay school fees during the pandemic.
