Corruption Charges and Transfer of Functions

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko faced 19 corruption charges, abuse of office, and irregular payments, resulting in the county losing Sh357 million.

He was accused of conspiring to embezzle Sh24.1 million between July 1, 2018, and January 31, 2019, and receiving Sh1 million from Web Tribe Limited through ROG Security Limited on January 19, 2019.

On February 25, 2020, Sonko signed a deal with the national government, transferring four key departments to the national government, including Health and Transport, Public Works, Utilities and Ancillary services, and County Government Planning and Development.

However, in a letter dated July 24, 2020, Sonko declared a dispute between the county and the national government, citing numerous illegalities in the deed of transfer.

He stated that the deal was grounded in sheer bad faith and monumental breaches of the Intergovernmental Relations Act, and that there was no consultation or cooperation from the national government prior to the execution of the Deed.

On July 27, 2020, Sonko claimed he was not sober when he signed the deal, stating that he was confused by some people at State House and was seeing zigzag by the time he was meeting the President for the signing.
