Kenya is taking steps to prepare for the transformative technology of 5G, with Huawei Kenya recently concluding a 6-day online training program for over 240 university students from 13 institutions across the country.
Published on July 24, 2020, the training program aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and navigate 5G technology. The program covered various aspects of 5G, including its architecture, deployment scenarios, application uses, and challenges.
Trainer Ding Yajie, a global specialist at Huawei, led the training program and was able to answer students' questions and test their understanding at the end of each session. The students were divided into different groups and conducted a 2-hour interactive course, 90 minutes of lectures, and 30 minutes of Q&A each day.
One of the students who participated in the training program was Sylvia Jebet Kipkemoi, a third-year BSc Telecommunications and Engineering student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She praised the training program, saying it was 'very informative and eye-opening' and that it helped her understand the deployment and evolution of 5G, as well as its application and how it works.
Mr. Samuel Kinuthia, the head of the Centre for Professional Certifications at Zetech University, noted that the course was beneficial to the university students, as they were able to learn new concepts and application scenarios of 5G technology. He also highlighted the potential benefits of 5G to institutions of higher learning, including immersive lessons with AR and VR, smart classrooms, and the assistance of students with special needs.
Dr. Michael W. Kimwele, Director of the School of Computing and Information Technology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, expressed his gratitude to Huawei for giving their students an opportunity to undertake the Huawei 5G training. He stated that the skills gained in the training will contribute towards their professional growth both in campus and in the work environment.
