On July 24, 2020, the world lost a shining example of humanity in the sudden demise of Tanzania's third President, Benjamin William Mkapa.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta paid tribute to the late President, describing him as a brilliant public servant who dedicated his life to serving his nation with honour, dignity, and excellence.

President Kenyatta recalled the late President's role as a mediator and facilitator of the Inter-Burundi Dialogue, which successfully led to Burundi's first peaceful and democratic presidential elections.

In Kenya, President Kenyatta praised the late President's pivotal role in mediating the 2007/2008 post-election violence and political impasse, which ended with the country's peace, reconciliation, and greater unity.

As a mark of respect for the fallen African giant, President Kenyatta declared three days of national mourning in Kenya, from July 27 to July 29, 2020.

During this period, the Kenyan Flag and the Flag of the East African Community will fly at half-mast.

President Kenyatta's tribute to the late President Mkapa was filled with gratitude for his legacy, which has left a lasting impact on the continent and the world.

As the late President Mkapa rests in Heaven, receiving his well-deserved reward, the people of Tanzania, Kenya, East Africa, Africa, and the world are reminded of the importance of his works and dedication.
