As of July 20, 2020, the government has enforced strict social distancing measures in public service vehicles, forcing matatu operators to rethink their seating arrangements.
By redesigning their vehicles, operators can now accommodate more passengers while adhering to the guidelines, a win-win for both parties.
According to Fred Mwangi, a Metro Trans operator, the new seating arrangement allows them to carry 24 passengers, up from the initial 16, while meeting their costs and servicing loans.
Passengers, like Irene Njeri, appreciate the new design, citing the added safety and comfort it provides.
The new arrangement also enables operators to maintain hygiene standards and undertake fumigation with ease.
