On July 20, 2020, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja presented himself at Kilimani Police Station, accompanied by his lawyer and colleague Senator Mutula Junior, after being arrested for flouting COVID-19 curfew orders.
During the incident, Sakaja's family was allegedly subjected to harassment by police officers, with his children being traumatized by the experience.
Speaking at the police station, Sakaja acknowledged that he was wrong to flout the rules and apologized for his actions, stating, 'On flouting the rules, I was wrong and I'm sorry. I will face the law like any other Kenyan.'
However, he condemned the police for their actions, saying, 'There is no need to send 50 police officers brandishing guns on my children. They committed no crime.'
Sakaja will be arraigned in court on the next day to face charges of flouting COVID-19 rules, and has announced his resignation from the Senate's Covid-19 committee, which he had been serving as Chairman.
