As of July 20, 2020, the government has enforced a strict limit on the number of passengers in public service vehicles, prompting matatu operators to rethink their seating arrangements.
By reducing the number of passengers and separating each seat, operators can now accommodate more passengers while maintaining social distancing, a win-win for both the operators and their customers.
According to Fred Mwangi, a Metro Trans operator, the new seating arrangement has allowed them to increase their passenger capacity from 16 to 24, enabling them to meet their costs and service loans.
Passengers like Irene Njeri appreciate the new arrangement, citing the added safety and comfort it provides.
With the new design, operators can also easily uphold hygiene standards and undertake fumigation, further enhancing the overall experience for passengers.
