On July 18, 2020, Nairobi County Senator Johnson Sakaja presented himself at Kilimani Police Station, following reports of a manhunt launched by police.
According to sources, Sakaja had gone into hiding after his arrest at Ladies Lounge in the same area on Saturday morning, where he was found drinking with three unidentified individuals.
The senator, who chairs the Senate ad hoc committee on Covid-19, was arrested for violating COVID-19 protocols that prohibit people from drinking alcohol at nightclubs and curfew restrictions that prevent citizens from being outside after 9 pm and before 4 am.
Accompanied by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and lawyer John Khaminwa, Sakaja walked into the police station, sparking controversy among Kenyans.
Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo had earlier stated that Sakaja had promised to present himself to the police but went AWOL.
“He has not recorded the statement but he will be recording anytime. We don’t know his whereabouts. He said he would present himself to the police. We hope he will keep his word,” Ndolo said.
