On July 20, 2020, residents of Maralal town in Samburu County celebrated the launch of a new modern market, marking a significant milestone in the county's development.

The old market, which was used by miraa traders, is being demolished to make way for the new construction, funded by the World Bank through the Maralal town municipality program at a cost of Sh53m.

Speaking during the launch, Samburu County Governor Moses Lenolkulal emphasized that the two-storey building will accommodate middle-class business enterprises and is expected to be completed within a year.

According to Governor Lenolkulal, the project is part of the county's comprehensive programs for the municipality of Maralal, aimed at empowering traders and raising revenue collection.

Mr. Moses Omondi, the County's Chief Officer of Lands, highlighted the county government's objective of giving priority to traders who owned stalls in the old miraa market and those who traded outside in an open-air environment.

Locals have welcomed the project with great hopes and suggestions, including the need for a design that favors the movement of people living with disabilities.
