Deputy President William Ruto's efforts to rally voters behind his 2022 presidential bid through donations may be in vain, according to political commentator Herman Manyora.
Manyora, a seasoned observer of Kenyan politics, believes that most voters in the country still prioritize voting for their tribesmen over other considerations.
“Some people have argued that if you want to get political support from a region, then you can ignore the leadership and go directly to the people. Ruto is doing the same. The question that you need to ask yourself, is if that will work. The answer is no,” Manyora stated.
He emphasized that politics in many parts of the country and even the world revolve around leaders, and that local leaders are essential in securing regional support.
Manyora also cited the purge against Ruto's foot soldiers in the National Assembly and the Senate, which resulted in a massive exodus to the President Uhuru and Raila Odinga-led handshake camp.
“The leaders whom he could have depended upon for grassroots support have all been hit by Uhuru Kenyatta. This is what has made him go directly to the people. His Tanga Tanga Team is dead,” Manyora stated.
