On July 20, 2020, a video emerged on social media showing a Pioneer School teacher smoking during a virtual class, sparking a reaction from the school's management.

The Murang'a-based privately-owned school defended the unidentified male Physics teacher, stating that he had not intended to smoke during the live lesson.

According to the school, the teacher had just concluded his lesson and was unaware that his video was still live when he lit the cigarette and began smoking.

Another teacher had already started the next lesson by the time the teacher took some puffs, the school explained.

The school's administration further noted that the video was leaked online by a parent who had been asked not to share it.

"This was posted by a form 2 parent even after pleading with him not to," the management said in a statement sent to parents.

The school has since taken disciplinary actions against the teacher, who has never smoked in the school compound, according to the management.

The school has urged parents to report such incidents to the management before making them public to avoid tarnishing the institution's reputation.
