On Monday, July 20, 2020, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja voluntarily presented himself at Kilimani Police Station, accompanied by his lawyers John Khaminwa and Mutula Kilonzo Jr., to face charges of violating the ongoing curfew order over the weekend.
Speaking to journalists at the police station, Dr. Khaminwa clarified that the senator was not expected to spend the night at the cells, having already deposited a Sh10,000 cash bail.
Senator Sakaja took responsibility for flouting the curfew guidelines and announced his resignation from the Senate Covid-19 ad hoc committee, stating, "I will abide by the law, no one is above the law, I’m not above the law. The law applies to me like any other Kenyan."

He urged Kenyans to follow the government’s directives on Covid-19 and castigated the police for sending 50 officers on a stakeout at his residence for two days, stating, "I am not on the run."
