On Monday, July 20, 2020, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja presented himself at Kilimani Police Station, accompanied by his lawyers John Khaminwa and Mutula Kilonzo Jr., to face charges related to the ongoing curfew order.
Speaking to journalists at the police station, Dr. Khaminwa stated that the senator had deposited a Sh10,000 cash bail and would not be spending the night in the cells.
Senator Sakaja took responsibility for flouting the curfew guidelines and announced his resignation from the Senate Covid-19 ad hoc committee.
"I will abide by the law, no one is above the law, I’m not above the law. The law applies to me like any other Kenyan," he said.
He urged Kenyans to follow the government’s directives on Covid-19 and castigated the police for sending 50 officers on a stakeout at his residence for two days.
