On Sunday, July 19, 2020, Safaricom Plc resumed M-PESA services after a planned maintenance that caused an outage since Saturday, July 18 at 10 p.m.

As part of the update, Safaricom will now show how much more the user is permitted to use or send in a day after every transaction. This update will accompany the transaction message that the telecommunication company usually sends when M-PESA is used.

For instance, if an M-PESA user transacts Ksh20,000, the message at the bottom will indicate that Ksh80,000 can still be transacted by the user in a day.

The update comes after the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) announced a raft of measures on Monday, March 16, 2020, that included an increase in transaction limit for mobile money.

The daily limit for mobile money transactions was more than doubled from Ksh140,000 to Ksh300,000 to promote the use of cashless payments during the Covid-19 pandemic.

CBK also announced an increase in the limit in a single transaction from Ksh70,000 to Ksh150,000 in a day.

According to Safaricom, the update aims to save M-PESA users from calculating how much they are left to spend in a day after every transaction, which posed a challenge to those dealing with large amounts.

"All M-PESA services have been fully restored following the earlier communicated planned service maintenance," Safaricom stated.

"We apologise for any inconveniences caused during the maintenance and thank our partners and customers for their continued support," the statement added.
