On July 19, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha revealed that only three teachers training colleges in Kenya would reopen in September after meeting the required COVID-19 containment measures.
The three colleges, which have achieved the necessary infrastructure to slow down the spread of COVID-19, include Murang'a Teachers Training College at 80%, Kericho TTC at 70%, and Asumbi Teachers Training College in Rangwe Sub County, Homa Bay County, at 65%.
Prof. Magoha emphasized that the government would not allow colleges to resume operations in September if they had not fully met the required standards, citing inadequate thermoguns and lack of social distancing measures as major concerns.
The Education CS also stated that teachers training colleges are expected to admit new students who will be taught the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) from September next year, after students undertaking studies in the old education system complete their education in December.
Furthermore, Prof. Magoha revealed that the government had not cleared any university in the country to reopen, and those that had declared themselves ready to resume learning were lying to students, as they had not been cleared by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education.
However, he noted that Strathmore University was the only institution trying to meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
