On July 19, 2020, Kenya's health ministry reported nine newly registered coronavirus-linked deaths, bringing the country's death toll to 234, with a case fatality rate of 1.75 percent.
According to the health ministry, the country's death rate has averaged below 2 percent in July, a significant decrease from the 2.5 percent recorded in June and 3.4 percent in May. The highest fatality rate was reported in April at 5.1 percent.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the recovery of 682 patients, including 562 who were placed under home-based care, bringing the total number of patients cleared after recovering from the virus since April 1 to 5,122.
However, Kagwe reported 603 newly detected infections following a scrutiny of 5,724 samples, with the infected persons including a 7-month-old. The newly reported infections have increased the country's cumulative reported COVID-19 cases since March 14 to 13,353.
The new patients were reported in various counties, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kilifi, Machakos, Kisii, Makueni, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Kwale, Lamu, Narok, Tharaka Nithi, and Uasin Gishu.
