On Sunday, 19 July 2020, a video of Deputy President William Ruto sharing a meal with his employees at his Sugoi farm went viral, sparking a heated debate.
Wearing gumboots, Ruto was handed a plate of githeri prepared by one of the residents, as others lined up to join in the feast in the full glare of the camera.
However, the meal did not go without its hiccups, with Ruto commenting that the maize was not well cooked. The cook blamed it on the firewood she had used.
The video, posted online by Sylvia Wangechi, attracted both praise and criticism in equal measure.
Some hailed Ruto as a humble man who mingles with common men with ease and relates with their problems.
Others, however, opined that the whole scene was deliberately stage-managed and captured on camera for political mileage.
