On Sunday, July 19, 2020, a video of Deputy President William Ruto eating githeri at his Sugoi Farm in Uasin Gishu County went viral, showcasing his humility and willingness to connect with ordinary citizens.

Wearing gumboots and carrying a walking stick, Ruto was handed a plate of the maize and beans meal by one of the residents in the area. He was seen commenting that the maize was under-cooked, a situation that the chef blamed on the firewood she used.

As Ruto enjoyed the meal, several other workers lined up with plates to be served, with security officers keeping a close eye. The video has sparked a mix of reactions, with some praising Ruto's ability to engage with citizens from diverse backgrounds, while others accused him of using such engagements as publicity stunts.

His allies have premised the 2022 election on the 'Hustler' ideology, touting Ruto's rise from a small-time businessman to the corridors of power. Videos of Ruto engaging with ordinary citizens, including roast maize vendors and enjoying meals at local kibandas, have been used to argue in support of the Hustlers' outfit.

Expectedly, the viral githeri video saw Ruto praised for his ability to engage citizens from diverse backgrounds, including his own workers. However, he also attracted criticism from a section of Kenyans who accused him of using such engagements as publicity stunts to further his image.
