Herman Manyora Warns DP William Ruto's Donations May Not Guarantee 2022 Victory

Published on July 19, 2020

Political observer Herman Manyora has urged Deputy President William Ruto to devise alternative methods to rally voters behind his 2022 presidential bid, citing the ineffectiveness of his current donation drives.

Manyora, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, claimed that Ruto's decision to go directly to the people with donations may not yield the desired results, given the country's tribal voting patterns.

"Some people have argued that if you want to get political support from a region, then you can ignore the leadership and go directly to the people. Ruto is doing the same. The question that you need to ask yourself, is if that will work. The answer is no," Manyora said.

He added that Kenyans consider other factors, such as tribe and leadership, when voting, and that Ruto's donations may not be enough to sway voters.

Manyora also cited the purge against Ruto's foot soldiers in the National Assembly and Senate, which resulted in a massive exodus to the President Uhuru and Raila Odinga-led handshake camp.

"The leaders whom he could have depended upon for grassroot support have all been hit by Uhuru Kenyatta. This is what has made him go directly to the people. His Tanga Tanga Team is dead. Will he be able to match the handshake team when all his generals have been floored?" Manyora stated.

Manyora's comments come as Ruto continues to face challenges in his bid for the presidency in 2022.
