On July 19, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta joined world leaders in mourning American civil rights crusader John Lewis, who had passed away at the age of 80 due to pancreatic cancer.

According to the President, Lewis's death had robbed the world of an inspirational politician whose achievements helped shape the careers of many renowned global leaders.

President Kenyatta extended his condolences to Lewis's family, the Democratic Party, and his supporters during this difficult period of grief.

John Lewis was a key figure in the American civil rights movement, having helped Martin Luther King Jr. organize the historic March on Washington in 1963.

He was also a survivor of brutal state trooper violence, having suffered a fractured skull during a confrontation.

As the youngest and last survivor of the 'Big Six' civil rights activists, Lewis played a pivotal role in the fight against segregation.
