On a mission to restore dignity among the poor, celebrity barber Dola Barberia has been distributing free masks in Nairobi's slums since 2013, with over 3,000 masks given out so far.

According to Dola, who has been practicing the trade for seven years, his initiative began after witnessing the struggles of people in the slums due to the lack of masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘He started the initiative after he saw how people in the slums were suffering due to lack of mask… Initially he only started with a few masks he had for himself then later got support from his friends, clients, and celebrities,’ Dola explained.

Notable celebrities such as Huddah, Boniface Mwangi, and Guardian Angel have supported Dola's initiative, with local broadcasting stations also lending a hand.

When asked about how he secured the support of these celebrities, Dola said, ‘I talked to them and pitched the idea and they decided to support me.’

With a network of celebrity friends and clients, Dola has had the opportunity to interact with various high-profile individuals, including King Kaka, JBlessing, Masterpiece, Kelechi, and Guardian Angel.

Among his inspirations is Boniface Mwangi, who has been recognized for his philanthropic efforts in helping people in the slums.

Looking ahead, Dola plans to train people living in the slums in a skill that can help them earn a living, with the aim of empowering them to put food on the table.
