On July 16, 2020, a disturbing incident occurred at the Agricultural Training Centre in Busia County, an isolation facility set aside by the Ministry of Health for coronavirus patients.
A police officer, one of two officers and three wardens from Busia prison stationed to guard the facility, was found engaging in a heinous act with a patient.
According to a police report, one of the officers on routine patrol noticed the suspect 'engaging a patient' and became uncomfortable, prompting him to return to the guard room.
He then narrated to his colleagues what he had witnessed, and they became suspicious, but upon going to check on the suspect and the patient, they did not find them.
However, at about a little past midnight, they reportedly heard a commotion coming from the women's ward.
Upon rushing to the scene, the officers found all the other patients outside 'complaining that the prison officer was raping the said lady patient.'
Health officers were summoned to the scene, and the officer was disarmed by senior colleagues from Busia Prison before being quarantined within the same facility.
