On July 19, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Marti area, Samburu North Sub County, where a schoolboy was shot dead and two others seriously injured during a cattle raid.
According to Mr. Henry Lonyelo, the area chairman, the deceased was herding goats when a group of armed people from another community stormed the area, firing at the herders.
"They drove away an unknown number of goats that this boy was herding after they shot and killed him on the spot," Mr. Lonyelo said.
During the incident, a total of 100 goats and 70 cattle were stolen, but the 70 cattle were later recovered abandoned in bushes.
Mr. Lonyelo appealed to the national government to take action against those who participated in the raid, stating that three families had lost their livestock.
Kenya Red Cross Extension Officer, Mr. William Nko, also appealed to the government to recover the stolen 100 goats and return them to the owners as a step towards peace restoration in the area.
Samburu North Sub County Police Commander, Mr. Tom Makori, confirmed the incident, stating that the victims, aged 10 and 14, were admitted at Samburu County referral hospital in Maralal town, where they were recuperating.
The deceased's body was transferred to Maralal referral hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Mr. Makori said police had launched investigations into the incident to recover the missing livestock and arrest suspects.
