A 7-year-old pupil was shot dead by armed cattle rustlers in Samburu County on July 18, 2020.

The attack occurred near Marti town, where the child was herding livestock with two other children.

According to eyewitnesses, the armed bandits made off with over 250 goats, shooting the child on the spot and injuring the two others who were shot from behind while running away.

The injured children were taken to Marti Dispensary for first aid before being transferred to Maralal Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.

Locals have expressed outrage that the attack occurred just 300 meters from the Marti Police Station and General Service Unit camp, with some suggesting that senior police officers were off duty at the time.

Samburu North Sub-County Police Commander Tom Makori declined to comment on the incident.

Locals have called on the government to speed up investigations and apprehend the culprits, who are believed to have come from a neighboring county.
