On July 18, 2020, police officers in Vihiga dispersed a gathering of DP William Ruto's allies at MP Charles Gimose's home, sparking dramatic scenes.
According to eyewitnesses, officers arrived at the scene as early as 7am and took down tents that had been set up for the event.
Former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale was addressing a crowd of MCAs and civilians when police lobbed teargas canisters at them.
Images shared on social media showed politicians standing off against police officers, with Khalwale and Mumias East MP Ben Washiali reportedly sneaking into the compound through a fence to escape the police.
Khalwale was seen pouring water on Hamisi OCPD Johana Chebii before fleeing the scene, while Washiali bore the brunt of the teargas canisters.
Justus Murunga, the Matungu legislator, was turned away from the venue shortly after he arrived, and MP Gimose was detained at his house.
After the incident, Khalwale claimed that the water he poured on the police officer was meant to put out a fire sparked by a teargas canister at MP Gimose's house.
