The long-awaited Nakuru Airport project has gained momentum, with the closing of bids for the construction of the multi-million shilling project.
Expected to cost Ksh 400 million, the project aims to elevate the military-owned Lanet Airstrip into a modern airport.
According to plans, the project will be completed in two phases, with the initial phase including the construction of a 1.7km runway, rehabilitation of the current runway to bitumen standards, and the erection of a fence and construction of taxi ways.
Phase One will also see the construction of a terminal building and a military lounge, construction of air rescue and fire fighting building, as well as the construction of military and civilian gates.
A power substation and a patrol road will also be completed in the first phase.
Once complete, the new airport will allow bigger cargo and passenger planes of approximately 40 to 100 tonnes.
The new airport is expected to facilitate international connectivity and transport, heavily relying on the upcoming airport to promote and boost Nakuru's robust hospitality and tourism industry.
The airport will also offer an alternative route for flights diverted from Nairobi.
