Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja Arrested for Flouting COVID-19 Guidelines ¶
On Saturday, July 18, 2020, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was arrested for flouting COVID-19 guidelines in Kilimani, Nairobi. He was found drinking at a nightclub with 10 other friends at 2 a.m.
According to Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo, Sakaja was arrested with two others for flouting curfew regulations following a distress call from area residents who complained of noise coming from the entertainment joint.
Ndolo said that Sakaja defied the first team of officers who arrived at the bar, prompting them to call in their seniors who also asked him to leave but he refused.
The senator is said to have incited the other suspects to refuse arrest and went further threatening them that he will have all of them transferred within 24 hours.
However, Ndolo dismissed Sakaja's threats as hot air saying he had no powers to transfer police officers.
Interestingly, despite having been recorded in a viral video at Kilimani Police Station, the lawmaker came out denying that he was arrested and asked those claiming so to show him a police report.
Sakaja was offered to be released on a free bond but declined to leave the station and remained there for several hours.
On July 19, 2020, Ndolo hinted that no court action may be taken against Sakaja, saying consultations were underway to find the right action to be taken against the senator.
