Published on July 18, 2020, a power struggle within FORD Kenya party has seen two factions emerge, each vying for control. The factions are led by Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula.
Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu, who belongs to Wamunyinyi's camp, has vowed to reclaim the party, saying the journey is unstoppable. He expressed confidence that they will restore the party to its 'lost glory.'
Simiyu's comments come after Wamunyinyi's group ousted Wetang'ula as party leader on May 31. Wetang'ula dismissed the move as illegal, citing gross misconduct and failure to champion unity in the party.
However, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP) wrote separately to the two warring factions in June, pointing out gaps in the party's ownership documents. The RPP's move has further complicated the situation, with both factions claiming to be the rightful holders of the party's legal instruments.
Simiyu's determination to reclaim the party has sparked hope among supporters of Wamunyinyi's faction. They believe that Simiyu's leadership will bring much-needed unity and stability to the party.
