On January 18, 2020, a tense standoff unfolded in Mumias when former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale clashed with police officers who had stormed a meeting he was holding with local politicians.

According to reports, the meeting was convened by Hamisi Member of Parliament Charles Gimose, and it was attended by several prominent politicians, including Mumias East Member of Parliament Ben Washiali and Matungu Member of Parliament Justus Marunga.

As the police officers, led by Hamisi OCPD Johana Chebii, attempted to disperse the gathering, Khalwale was seen holding a bucket of water, which he later used to douse the police boss before making a quick escape.
