Isiolo Woman's Selfless Act: Delivering Water to Vulnerable Families

On a daily basis, Irene Kanana, a 44-year-old woman from Isiolo County, has been using her boda boda to deliver water to 20 vulnerable families who struggle to get the crucial commodity due to old age or disability.

According to Kanana, she has been doing deliveries daily and makes sure that each family gets water at least twice a week. She buys the water at Ksh 5 per 20-litre jerrycan and uses her own money to fuel the boda boda.

While riding her motorcycle, she is able to fetch 6 jerrycans each containing 20 litres at a go. Kanana believes that her sacrifice helps improve the lives of her beneficiaries though she doesn’t have much more she can offer.

She stated, “I buy the water at Ksh 5 per 20-litre jerrycan and fuel my boda boda. I use almost Ksh 1,000 daily but God has been providing.”

Kanana challenged the national government to ensure that the Covid-19 stipend announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta benefits only those in need. She appealed, “I know many families which are vulnerable but don’t receive the regular stipend, I wonder why. I would like to ask the chiefs to enroll these families into the program because these people will not die of Coronavirus, but of hunger.”
