On Saturday, July 18, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha toured Asumbi Teachers Training College in Homa Bay County, where he clarified the government's stance on university re-openings.
Contrary to reports that Chuka University was the first institution to be cleared for re-opening, CS Magoha stated that no university had been cleared by the government.
"The government has not cleared any university for reopening. Chuka University has not been cleared for reopening unless they cleared themselves," he said, emphasizing that institutions needed a certificate from his office or the Education Principal Secretary to be given the go-ahead.
During his tour, CS Magoha observed that several universities had taken preventive measures on their campuses, but noted that Strathmore University was the only institution that was about to get cleared.
However, he added that even Strathmore University still had several measures to meet before being cleared to operate.
CS Magoha also pointed out that upon inspecting various institutions, he observed that some measures still needed to be taken before being cleared to operate.
At Kericho Teachers College, he noted that more water points were needed, as well as the adoption of automatic hand sanitisers.
At Asumbi TTC, he conveyed that the administration was required to train the staff on better prevention measures, as he pointed out that some were not wearing their masks appropriately.
