On July 17, 2020, the government launched the National hygiene programme, dubbed 'Kazi Mtaani', in Kitale town to mitigate the effects of Covid-19 among youths.

Wildlife Principal Secretary Prof. Fred Sigor announced that the government will spend Sh.10 billion nationally on the initiative.

Prof. Sigor stated that youths in Trans Nzoia will receive Sh.135 million at the end of the six-month programme.

According to Prof. Sigor, many youths are facing unemployment due to the corona virus, leaving them vulnerable.

The PS noted that the initiative benefits youths from informal settlements, with the initial payment of Sh.650 per day per youth being reversed downwards to Sh. 455 to accommodate more youths.

Prof. Sigor also mentioned that the programme will help individual youths earn something besides helping clean the town.

Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba expressed concern over upcoming slums in rural areas and asked the national government to work with him to stop the move.

He also requested the national government to move with speed to complete the Kitale-Suam road, which is at 58 percent completion.

Over 4,000 youths have been enrolled in the National hygiene programme in Trans Nzoia and will work for 11 days in a month for six months.
