On a fateful day in 2020, I hit rock bottom with a bank balance of Sh200. It was a harsh reality check, but it marked the beginning of a profound journey of self-discovery. As I reflect on that period, I realize that what was affecting me was deeper than just money.

Increased cases of depression, feelings of inadequacy, and a sense of hopelessness had become all too familiar. We've been conditioned to believe that money is the answer to our problems, but the truth is, it's only a tool. Our true identity lies beyond the confines of our bank accounts.

As I navigated this challenging time, I began to question the societal norms that had led me astray. We've been taught to chase after money, status, and material possessions, but in doing so, we've lost sight of what truly matters. Our identity is not defined by our bank balance or job title; it's shaped by our values, passions, and character.

So, how do we break free from the illusion of identity? It starts with taking responsibility for our thoughts and actions. We must confront our fears, insecurities, and mistakes head-on. We must learn to cope with uncertainty and ambiguity, rather than relying on money to provide a sense of security.

As I look back on my journey, I realize that my ability to learn and communicate was far more valuable than my bank account. I started a business advising people about money with no money, and it was a turning point in my life. I learned to peel back the layers of identity and discover who I was without the trappings of wealth and status.

So, I ask you: what do you truly want? Is it the house, the car, or the job title? Or is it something deeper? Do you want to be a better parent, a more creative person, or a more compassionate friend? The answer lies within, and it's time to stop chasing after the wrong things.

As Waceke Nduati Omanga, author of 'Making Cents', I invite you to join me on this journey of self-discovery. Let's break free from the illusion of identity and uncover our true potential.
