Aga Khan University Appoints Prof Lukoye Atwoli as New Dean of Medical College

Prof Lukoye Atwoli, son of Cotu boss Francis Atwoli, has been appointed as the new Dean of Medical College at Aga Khan University, effective August 1st, 2020. The appointment comes at a time when the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof Lukoye brings a wealth of experience and research credentials to the role, having previously served as the Dean of the Moi University School of Medicine. He is also a member of the World Health Organization's World Mental Health Surveys Consortium and has worked on various initiatives, including the citiesRISE project, which aims to increase connectedness among young people in urban areas.

Prof Lukoye holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Moi University, a Master of Medicine in Psychiatry from the University of Nairobi, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town. He is also a visiting scientist at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and an honorary associate professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, University of Cape Town.

Prof Lukoye's father, Francis Atwoli, took to social media to express his pride and gratitude for his son's new appointment, saying, “Professor Lukoye comes to AKU in the midst of a global pandemic. Given his experience and research credentials, and through his gentle but firm leadership, he brings a steady pair of hands to help the Medical College, East Africa navigate the challenges ahead.”
