July 18, 2020, marked a new era for the Kenya National Audit Office with the swearing in of new Auditor General Nancy Gathungu. As she assumed office, she acknowledged the challenges posed by the vacancy left by her predecessor, Edward Ouko, who exited in August last year.
Ms Gathungu emphasized the importance of clearing the audit backlog, which has hindered the accountability role of the Kenya National Audit Office. She stated, 'I am assuming office at challenging times owing to the gap that existed after expiry of the term of my predecessor and my assuming office. This has occasioned the backlog of audit reports.'
Her priority is to put in place mechanisms to clear the backlog as soon as possible, enabling public entities to hold their annual general meetings and development partners to receive feedback on project spending. This, in turn, will allow the people of Kenya to access information on how public resources have been managed for their benefit.
The Auditor General oversees over 1,000 public entities, including ministries, agencies, departments, and independent government bodies.
