On the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic, a 54-year-old driver from Engashura village in Bahati Sub-county has found a new sense of purpose in his life. Mr Joseph Mbuthia, who was initially hesitant to take on the role due to safety concerns, has been transporting Covid-19 samples for tests at influenza laboratories in Nairobi from Nakuru.

Published on July 18, 2020, Mbuthia's story is a testament to the selfless service of front-line workers who have been tirelessly working to combat the pandemic. His wife and children encouraged him to take up the role, and he now performs it with passion.

As Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe noted, Mbuthia's efforts have not gone unnoticed. “All healthcare workers have been on the forefront, and I appreciate their work. But for this driver, he has constantly ferried samples to laboratories in Nairobi, on a daily basis. He is available after normal working hours,” Kagwe said.

Mbuthia's dedication to his work is driven by a desire to serve humanity. Speaking to the Saturday Standard, he said, “I know Covid-19 is a deadly disease, and when called upon, I do not hesitate because I think delay may result into death of a patient, or cause more complications.”

At the Naivasha Hospital, Dr Angeline Ithondeka has been instrumental in managing Covid-19 positive patients. She has trained 316 healthcare workers on how to handle Covid-19 patients and has implemented a six-pointer plan to help manage the situation.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has also applauded medics for their tireless efforts in treating patients.
