On July 17, 2020, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced a landmark five-year, Sh1.2 billion sponsorship deal with gaming company BetKing to support the local league.

The deal, which will see the league renamed the BetKing Premier League, has sparked debate about the implications of corporate sponsorship on the league's identity and independence.

Under the new arrangement, each of the 18 clubs competing in the top-tier competition will receive at least Sh8 million in annual grants, a significant boost to their finances.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa and his team must ensure good governance and accountability in the use of these funds to avoid any potential pitfalls.

With FKF elections around the corner, it is crucial that the deal is not used as a campaigning tool, but rather as part of a long-term strategy to revitalize Kenyan football.

The deal comes at a time when Kenyan clubs were on the brink of collapse following SportPesa's decision to cease operations in Kenya and stop financing the league and individual clubs.

While the BetKing deal is welcome, it is essential for both the federation and clubs to diversify their revenue streams to mitigate the risks associated with relying on a single sponsor.

Club officials must also prioritize transparency and accountability to ensure that the benefits of the sponsorship trickle down to the players.
