On July 17, 2020, the National Assembly concluded committee elections, filling all vacant positions in parliamentary committees affected by a recent purge.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM Leader Raila Odinga, and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi's allies emerged victorious, securing plum dockets in the process.

The outcome confirmed their decision to push Deputy President William Ruto's supporters away from powerful positions.

House Speaker Justin Muturi had issued an ultimatum on Wednesday, requiring all incomplete committees to fill vacant positions by close of business on Friday.

The positions in question were previously occupied by MPs thought to be allies of William Ruto, who were purged by the ruling and opposition parties over alleged failure to toe the parties' lines.

President Kenyatta's allies, such as Kieni MP Kanini Kega, took over the chairmanship of the powerful Budget and Appropriations committee, previously chaired by Kikuyu lawmaker Kimani Ichungwa, a sworn DP Ruto ally.

Raila Odinga's allies, including Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga, took control of crucial committees like the Finance and National Planning Committee.

Other key appointments include Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo as vice-chairperson of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and Peter Kaluma as vice-chairperson of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee.
