On July 17, 2020, the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced plans to replace Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, sparking panic among President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.
The ICC's move comes after Kenya strongly opposed the idea of replacing Bensouda, citing a lack of managerial experience among the candidates lined up to take her position.
According to reports, the most likely candidate to replace Bensouda is Irish international lawyer Fergal Gaynor, who was instrumental in defending victims of post-election violence in Kenya against the President and his deputy.
Gaynor's involvement in the case has raised concerns that the ICC may reopen the cases against Kenyatta and Ruto, which were previously dropped due to lack of evidence.
The Kenyan government has written to the ICC, expressing concerns that the candidates lined up to replace Bensouda lack the necessary experience to manage large international institutions.
