On February 4 and 5, Joshua Gichuki Mwangi and Ben Maxwell Anyira went missing after being last seen with Dennis Ndubi Mauda, who had requested their assistance in taking his wife to the hospital. A body, later identified as Anyira's, was found in Naivasha on February 20.

On July 7, Detective Corporal Lucas Juma of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations' Nairobi head offices applied for an extension of custodial orders for five days to take Mauda for mental assessment. Mauda objected to the application.

Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi allowed Juma to hold Mauda for the period pending the mental examination. Mauda had argued that he had been complying with investigators since his summons by Dagoretti DCI chief Francis Wanjau on July 4.

According to an affidavit filed by Juma, Mauda had held a meeting with the two victims before they proceeded to Riruta and later returned to the same area. Juma holds that Mauda is in possession of information that can help to trace Mwangi and unravel the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the two.
