On July 17, 2020, Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced that the country had sought the assistance of 20 specialized Cuban doctors to aid in the fight against COVID-19.
According to Kagwe, the Cuban doctors will be stationed at the Kenyatta University Hospital for six months, where they will work alongside Kenyan doctors to share knowledge and gain experience.
The move is part of a long-standing partnership between Kenya and Cuba, which has seen Kenyan doctors receive specialized training in Cuba since 2018.
Speaking to the press, Kagwe stated that the Cuban doctors are specialized in internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, and pediatrics, and will play a crucial role in supporting Kenyan doctors in managing the disease and exchanging skills.
He attributed the arrangement to a telephone call between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
