On July 17, 2020, a Kenyan plane crashed in Central Somalia, sparking an investigation by air crash detectives from Kenya.

According to Maj-Gen (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, Kenya's Ambassador to Somalia, the plane, registered as 5Y-VVU and operated by Blue Bird Aviation, had been contracted by the UN to deliver foodstuff and other humanitarian supplies to Beledwyene in Central Somalia.

The plane, which had flown in with the goods from Djibouti City, encountered mechanical problems as it approached the murram runway of the local airstrip in Somalia around 1:30 pm.

"The black box and other recorders were retrieved from the wreckage and will be flown to Nairobi for processing during investigations," the envoy said.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing, with a team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department led by Mr. Martyn Lunani traveling to Somalia to assist with the probe.
