On Thursday, July 16, 2020, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru took to Facebook to express her support for Sports and Heritage CS Amina Mohammed's bid to become the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Waiguru praised CS Amina Mohammed, saying, 'My sister and friend @AMB_A_Mohammed, I wish you the very best as you make your case in Geneva today for the Director General Position at the World Trade Organization. In the words of late American poet, Maya Angelou, “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within”. Keep shining on!'

President Uhuru Kenyatta has been a strong supporter of CS Amina Mohammed's bid, having dispatched a team of diplomats across the continent in February 2017 to seek support for her African Union Chair post.

Speaking on the matter, President Uhuru Kenyatta said, 'As a firm believer in the strengthening of international multilateral institutions, Kenya is convinced of the urgent need to revitalize the WTO to better serve the needs of all nations, large and small. We also believe that it is time that Africa took up her responsibility of serving at the helm of WTO.'

President Kenyatta's support for CS Amina Mohammed's bid is part of his broader vision of creating an enabling environment for women to take up leadership positions and for girls to compete fairly with boys.
