Kenya is grappling with a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, with the country's tally reaching 12,062 as of July 17, 2020.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced 389 new cases, with a concerning trend of men accounting for two-thirds of the infections.

"I am begging men to follow the containment measures, please wear masks," Kagwe urged, emphasizing the importance of individual responsibility in the fight against the virus.

Among the new cases, 260 were male and 129 females, with a five-month-old infant also reported to have contracted the virus.

On a positive note, 1,126 patients were cleared after recovering from the virus, with 781 discharged from hospitals and 345 from home-based care.

Unfortunately, fatalities rose to 222 after 5 more patients succumbed to the virus, according to Kagwe.

Nairobi County remains the epicenter of the outbreak, with 6,671 cases reported, followed by Mombasa County with 1,794 cases.
