On July 17, 2020, the world was still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. In Kenya, the government had ordered a stop to sports activities, but Eliud Kipchoge, the world marathon record holder and Olympic marathon champion, was eager to get back to training.
Speaking on NTV's Nation Leadership Forum programme, Kipchoge expressed his desire to resume training and compete in the rescheduled London Marathon, which was initially set for April 26 but was postponed to October 4 due to the pandemic.
"My preparations (for the London Marathon) have been going on well... I'm waiting for the CS to allow us to go back to our camps," Kipchoge said.
CS Amina Mohammed, who was also on the panel, revealed that the government was in talks with the European Union to allow Kenyan athletes to gain entry into Schengen states ahead of the resumption of the Diamond League.
Other panelists, including Daniel Ogutu, General Manager (HR and Administration) at the Kenya Ports Authority, and Peter Kiganya, a former Kenyan basketball international based in the USA, also shared their thoughts on the current state of sports in Kenya.
