On July 17, 2020, the education ministry announced plans to reopen Technical and Vocational Training Institutions (TVET) in September, contingent on compliance with COVID-19 prevention protocols.
According to Principal Secretary Julius Jwan, the Ministry of Education will release a comprehensive checklist outlining the necessary protocols for reopening.
“Only TVETs that would have been inspected and found to be compliant with the COVID-19 requirements will be allowed to reopen while giving priority to examination classes,” Jwan stated.
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha directed TVET institutions to open in September under strict COVID-19 protocols, alongside universities, citing their ability to implement social distancing measures.
Magoha emphasized the importance of adhering to Ministry of Health guidelines, including physical and social distancing, to combat the spread of the pandemic.
Primary and Secondary schools will reopen in 2021, following the government's decision to prioritize public health due to the high infection rate in the country.
Schools in Kenya were initially closed on March 15, 2020, by President Uhuru Kenyatta in response to the first confirmed case of coronavirus in the country.
