Published on July 17, 2020, a day after Kenya recorded its highest number of Covid-19 recoveries, a senior journalist at Citizen TV has tested positive for the virus.
The journalist, who has been at the forefront of covering the pandemic, underwent tests at a local hospital and confirmed the positive result in a statement to a local publication.
"The result was positive but I am feeling well. Currently am self-isolating in line with the Ministry of Health regulations and also doing my normal exercise in my room," the journalist said.
The news comes as the government faces criticism over the handling of Covid-19 testing at Pathologists Lancet Kenya, after a series of tests conducted at the facility sparked outrage.
On July 16, 2020, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe put the facility on the spot, citing conflicting results from tests conducted at the facility.
The controversy began after 17 teaching staff of St Andrew’s School Turi were tested for COVID-19 at Lancet laboratories and declared positive for the virus, only to be told they were COVID-free after their samples were taken to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri).
Hours after the Health CS's address, Pathologists Lancet Kenya Managing Director and Founder DR. Ahmed Kelebi quit social media as the storm raged.
