On July 17, 2020, a disturbing incident occurred at an isolation centre in Busia County, where a prison officer was caught raping a female Covid-19 patient.

The officer, attached to Busia prison, was on patrol with a colleague and two police officers when he stopped to talk to the patient. However, he took too long, and the other officers returned to the guard room, only to find him missing.

It was then that they heard screams from the women's wards and rushed to the scene, where they found other female patients protesting that the prison officer was raping a patient in her room.

Ministry of Health officials were summoned, and the man was disarmed and quarantined at the Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) after a police report was filed at Busia police station.
